Pool salt: why salt quality really changes your water

In a saltwater pool, salt is not merely a secondary ingredient: it is the raw material used by your chlorine generator. The cell converts dissolved salt through electrolysis to produce the sanitizer that keeps the water clean.

That is why, at Piscine Hippocampe, we favor Pristiva Premium Salt. Its high purity, low impurity content, and rapid dissolution make it, in our view, one of the best choices for a saltwater pool when you want to protect your system and maintain clear, pleasant water.

Our recommendation

You invested in a saltwater pool: don't choose your salt based solely on the price of the bag

Salt costs represent a small portion of your pool's total cost, but its quality directly affects your cell and your water. For us, choosing high-purity salt such as Pristiva is a simple and logical decision.

Saltwater pool with clear water

1. What is the actual purpose of salt in a pool?

A saltwater pool is still a pool sanitized with chlorine. The difference is that the chlorine is produced on site by the salt generator rather than added manually in liquid, granular, or tablet form.

The principle is as follows:

  1. salt dissolves in the water;
  2. salt water passes through the cell;
  3. electrolysis converts part of the sodium chloride into active chlorine;
  4. chlorine disinfects the water;
  5. the cycle repeats when the filtration system is running.

Salt is therefore directly connected to how your system operates. That is precisely why we consider its quality important.

2. Not all pool salt is the same

Two bags may seem identical simply because they both contain sodium chloride. However, refining quality, purity, grain size, and the amount of impurities can vary.

Lower-quality salt may contain higher amounts of unwanted elements. Depending on their nature and concentration, these impurities may contribute to:

  • deposits on certain surfaces or in the cell;
  • water that is more difficult to keep perfectly clear;
  • staining when metals are present;
  • additional maintenance;
  • less uniform dissolution;
  • unnecessary strain on a salt system that is already sensitive to water balance.

The difference in quality is not always visible in the bag. It is seen mainly in the consistency of the product and in what you choose not to introduce unnecessarily into your pool.

3. Pristiva Premium Salt vs. generic pool salt

Criteria Pristiva Premium Salt Generic salt
Purity High purity Varies by product
Impurities Low stated content May vary from one brand to another
Dissolution Fast and uniform Variable
Designed for pools Yes To check
Objective Stable salinity + clean environment for the cell Primarily reaching the salt level
Our recommendation Preferred choice Only if the specifications are adequate

Quality varies between brands. The term “generic” here refers to salt whose purity and characteristics are not necessarily comparable to those of Pristiva Premium.

The Piscine Hippocampe choice

Pristiva Premium Salt 18.1 kg

Pristiva Premium Salt is specifically designed for saltwater pools. Its product information highlights three factors that we consider particularly important: high purity, low impurity content, and fast dissolution.

For a homeowner, this means a product designed to do exactly what is expected of good pool salt: reach the target salinity cleanly, uniformly, and predictably.

Choosing Pristiva Premium Salt

Why Piscine Hippocampe recommends it so highly

We see many homeowners invest in a good pump, a good filter, a quality salt generator, and sometimes full automation… then choose salt solely because one bag is a few dollars cheaper.

To us, that doesn’t make sense. Salt enters the water directly and continuously circulates through your equipment. The cost difference between ordinary salt and premium salt is generally small compared with the value of the pool, the cell, and the other equipment.

Our philosophy

Using a cleaner product in a pool worth several thousand dollars is, in our opinion, one of the simplest choices to make. Salt is not where we recommend seeking the absolute lowest price.

4. Salt and the cell: why quality matters

The cell is one of the most important components of a salt system. It operates for hundreds of hours to produce chlorine. Its condition depends on several factors: water balance, pH, salinity, operating time, temperature, hardness, and maintenance.

High-purity salt obviously does not guarantee that a cell will never develop scale. However, choosing salt designed for pools with a low impurity content helps avoid unnecessarily adding additional contaminants to the water.

It’s a preventive approach: good-quality salt + proper salinity + balanced water + regular cell inspection.

If deposits actually appear on the cell, use a cleaner designed for this purpose, such as Pristiva Salt Cell Cleaner, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Before adding a bag

Always measure your salinity

The best salt in the world cannot compensate for an incorrect amount. Salt does not evaporate: it is mainly lost when water actually leaves the pool. Test before adding.

5. When should salt be added?

Salt may need to be added in several situations:

  • at opening, if the salinity is below the target;
  • after refilling;
  • after significant backwashing;
  • after a partial draining;
  • after a leak or repair;
  • after heavy rains that required a significant amount of water to be drained;
  • after a season of significant water loss from splashing.

Salt does not simply disappear because the water evaporates. When water evaporates, the salt remains in the pool. Automatically adding several bags without measuring can therefore lead to salinity that is too high.

How to properly add Pristiva Premium Salt

  1. Measure the current salinity.
  2. Confirm your generator's target.
  3. Calculate only the missing amount.
  4. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the cell during addition.
  5. Gradually pour the salt into the pool, away from the skimmer.
  6. Brush the piles on the bottom to speed up dissolution.
  7. Circulate the water until completely dissolved.
  8. Retest the salinity before adding more salt.

6. What salt level is needed in a pool?

There is no single universal level. Each generator has its own operating range.

Several residential systems operate around 3,000 to 4,000 ppm, but you should always follow the recommendation for the specific model.

For the MOOV MiniSalt and JustSalt systems we sell, Piscine Hippocampe generally operates around 3,500 ppm in standard mode. Some models also offer a Low Salt mode around 1,500 ppm, with different capacities.

Most importantly: never choose your salt level based on the number of bags you have on hand. Choose it based on the generator.

7. How to calculate the amount of salt to add

The practical formula is:

kg of salt to add = pool volume in litres × desired increase in ppm ÷ 1,000,000

Example: a 50,000 L pool needs to increase by 1,000 ppm. Approximately 50 kg of salt is needed, or about 2.8 bags of 18.1 kg Pristiva.

It is generally preferable to approach the target gradually rather than exceed the recommended concentration.

Why pay more for premium salt?

Because you are not simply paying for 18.1 kg of material. You are paying for more consistent quality, high purity, low impurity content, and rapid dissolution.

The price per bag is easy to compare. The quality of what we put into our pool is much harder to compare. That is precisely why we prefer to recommend a product we know and that was designed for this purpose.

For Piscine Hippocampe, Pristiva Premium is the salt of choice for a saltwater pool.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Pristiva pool salt

Are all pool salts the same?

No. Purity, the amount of impurities, grain size, and product consistency can vary. Pristiva Premium is formulated as a high-purity salt with low impurity content.

Why does Piscine Hippocampe recommend Pristiva?

Because we prefer to limit impurities introduced into the water and use salt specifically designed for chlorine generators. Its high purity, rapid dissolution, and consistent quality align with our maintenance approach.

Does Pristiva salt protect the cell?

High-quality salt can help limit unnecessary contaminants, but a cell’s lifespan also depends on pH, hardness, salinity, operating time, and maintenance. The system must be considered as a whole.

How many bags of Pristiva should I add?

It depends on the volume, the current salt level, and the generator’s target. Test the salinity before adding salt and use the formula volume × ppm to add ÷ 1,000,000 to obtain the required kilograms.

Can I add too much salt?

Yes. Excessively high salinity can cause errors or put the system outside its operating range. It is much easier to add a little salt than to remove it.

Does salt evaporate?

No. The salt remains in the water when it evaporates. It is mainly lost with the water removed during backwashing, draining, leaks, splashing, or overflow.
