Indonesian teak: natural beauty that transcends trends
You first notice its golden hues, grain, and warm character. Then you discover why Indonesian teak is so sought after in high-end outdoor furniture: it makes it possible to create sturdy, elegant, and comfortable pieces, with notable natural resistance to moisture.
But origin is not everything. Wood quality, drying, assembly, treatment, and care also explain the difference between a beautiful piece of furniture and one you’ll be happy to keep. Here’s what you need to know before choosing, with examples from our ATOLL collection at Piscine Hippocampe.
1. What is Indonesian teak?
Teak is a tropical wood from Tectona grandis. It has long been appreciated in landscaping and furniture for its distinctive grain, warm appearance, and natural properties. Indonesia is a country renowned for growing and working with teak, which explains its presence in many furniture collections.
Teak can range in color from honey to a deeper brown, depending on the piece of wood and the finish applied. Its natural grain makes each piece of furniture slightly different: this variation is part of the material’s charm.
An important point: “Indonesian teak” describes the origin of the wood, but does not by itself guarantee a particular grade, environmental certification, or specific finish. To assess the true quality, you need to look at the furniture as a whole.
2. Why is teak so sought after for outdoor furniture?
Its oils and natural compounds give it notable resistance to moisture and outdoor conditions, without making it invulnerable.
Unlike some entirely metal structures, wood brings natural texture and depth.
Over time and with exposure, teak can develop a silver-gray patina prized for its natural appearance.
It pairs well with rope, synthetic rattan, aluminum, fabrics, and contemporary mineral surfaces.
At ATOLL, we particularly appreciate the contrast between a teak frame and visually lighter rope. The result is both architectural, welcoming, and easy to integrate into different décors.
3. What distinguishes a quality teak piece of furniture?
The choice of wood is important, but it does not explain everything. Here are the factors that deserve attention when buying high-end furniture.
- Wood selection and drying. Properly prepared and dried wood helps limit deformation caused by changes in humidity, without completely eliminating the material's natural movement.
- Quality of the joints. A good armchair is also judged by its strength, stability, fit of the pieces, and the way loads are supported.
- Attention to the finish. Surface consistency, edges, feel, and the treatment applied contribute as much to the appearance as they do to future maintenance.
- Associated materials. The rope, cushions, synthetic rattan, fasteners, and complementary surfaces must also be suitable for the intended environment.
- Appropriate use. A covered terrace, a sunroom, a dining room, or a fully exposed patio do not present the same constraints.
Some ATOLL furniture, such as the Nova chair, the Azura Rope Lazy Chair, and the Luna set, are described in our catalog as being made with treated and sealed teak. This finish should be maintained according to the product-specific recommendations.

4. Teak, aluminum, acacia wood, or mineral materials: what are the differences?
There is no single material that is superior to all others in every situation. The right choice depends on the style, desired weight, exposure, and maintenance habits.
| Material | Its main advantage | Things to consider | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teak | Natural wood, warmth, and good moisture resistance | Patina, cleaning, and maintenance depend on the finish | Natural, timeless, refined |
| Aluminum | Lighter structure, slender lines, simple maintenance | Finish must be protected from impacts and scratches | Contemporary, streamlined |
| Acacia and other woods | Warm look, variety of finishes | Durability and maintenance vary greatly depending on the species and protection | Natural, classic, or modern |
| Fiber cement / microcement | Mineral effect and sculptural design | Weight, finish maintenance, and surface-specific precautions | Architectural and contemporary |
Why choose a combination? The combination of teak + aluminum creates a contemporary silhouette with a warm touch; teak + rope emphasizes texture; teak + microcement creates a striking contrast, particularly popular on large tables.

Teak is valued for its natural resistance, but “low maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance”. Sun, rain, dust, pollution, pool splashes, and temperature fluctuations affect the appearance of a piece.
A simple routine for outdoor furniture
- Regularly remove dust, leaves, and debris with a cloth or soft brush.
- When needed, gently clean with water and a mild soap suitable for the furniture’s finish.
- Avoid pressure washers, harsh abrasives, and non-recommended chemicals.
- Wipe away accumulated water and let dry in a well-ventilated area.
- Protect cushions and wood during extended periods of bad weather, taking the material and sealant into account.
Does teak turn gray?
When exposed to UV rays and the elements without maintained protective finishing, teak can gradually develop a silvery-gray patina. This is a natural aesthetic evolution of the wood; on its own, it does not indicate a structural problem. If you prefer to preserve a more golden tone, ask which finish and maintenance schedule are suitable for your furniture.
Should teak be oiled or sealed?
Not automatically. Some ATOLL pieces are already treated and sealed. Adding an oil, powerful cleaner, or incompatible sealer may alter the appearance or interact with the existing finish. First confirm the original finish and use the products and method recommended for that piece. Test on an inconspicuous area if advised.
7. Can teak be left outdoors during the Quebec winter?
Teak offers good natural resistance, but our winters bring freezing, snow, thawing, prolonged moisture, and major temperature fluctuations. The joints, finishes, and other materials in the furniture also have their limits.
Our recommendation: whenever possible, clean and dry the furniture, store the cushions indoors, and keep the pieces in a dry, well-ventilated space. If storage is not possible, find out about the protection suitable for the model; in particular, avoid covers that retain moisture against the wood for extended periods.
An ATOLL piece intended primarily for a covered terrace, veranda, or protected outdoor space should not automatically be considered designed to remain unprotected in the middle of the snow. Check the use indicated on its product page.
8. Teak, an ideal foundation for an indoor-outdoor setting
With off-white, sandy tones, and natural rope, teak creates a bright atmosphere. Paired with charcoal or fiber cement tabletops, it adds welcome warmth to a more modern setting. It works equally well on a large terrace, in a dining room, or in a solarium, depending on the recommended use for each piece of furniture.
To complete your setup, Hippocampe Pool also offers a wide selection of artificial plants directly at its Delson location, on Montreal's South Shore. A large plant, a beautiful planter, and a teak piece can be all it takes to give character to a relaxation area.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions about Indonesian teak
Is Indonesian teak a good choice for outdoor use?
Yes, it is a sought-after wood, particularly for its natural properties and appearance. However, you should consider the quality of construction, the applied finish, the degree of exposure and the furniture's maintenance.
Are all teak furniture pieces of the same quality?
No. The choice of wood, its drying process, joinery, finishes and complementary materials vary. Indonesian origin alone does not guarantee a particular quality grade.
Why can teak change color?
Sun, moisture and exposure can cause teak to develop silvery-gray tones, particularly if its finish is not maintained. The rate of change also depends on the initial treatment and exposure conditions.
Does treated and sealed teak require maintenance?
Yes. Gentle cleaning, protection against prolonged moisture and monitoring the sealant remain important. It is best to know the furniture's finish before applying oil or a new protective product.
Which ATOLL teak furniture should you choose for a small terrace?
An individual piece, such as the Nova chair, can add a warm presence without requiring a large, complete living room set. Always check the dimensions and available clearance.
