Opening a saltwater pool: complete step-by-step guide

Opening a saltwater pool requires a little more method than simply restarting the filtration system. You need to clean the pool, put the equipment back into service, balance the water, check the salinity, and wait for the right time before reactivating the salt cell.

In this guide, Hippocampe Pool shows you when to open a saltwater pool in Quebec, the order in which to complete the steps, and how to avoid prematurely damaging the cell.

When should you open a saltwater pool in Quebec?

The best time is generally when the water is still cool, often around 12 to 15 °C. There is no need to wait until the temperature is pleasant for swimming.

Opening early allows circulation to be restored before algae and contaminants take advantage of the warming water. The longer the pool remains closed as temperatures rise, the longer and more costly recovery can become.

Hippocampe Pool Tip

If the ice has disappeared, the plumbing can be put back into service without a significant risk of freezing, and the water is beginning to warm up, it is often better to open early and keep the salt cell temporarily inactive.

Why not start the salt cell immediately?

A pool can be opened well before the water is warm enough for the salt chlorinator to operate under optimal conditions.

At the beginning of spring, we generally recommend circulating and sanitizing the water conventionally, then activating the salt system when the temperature enters the range recommended by the manufacturer.

If your system uses a bypass cell ("dummy cell"), it can be installed temporarily during this period to circulate the water without putting the production cell under strain.

Step-by-step opening

How to open a saltwater pool

1. Remove and clean the cover

Remove the water and debris accumulated on the cover before removing it. Clean it and let it dry before storing it. Avoid letting leaves or standing water fall into the pool.

2. Raise the water level

Fill the pool to the normal operating level, generally around the middle of the skimmer. This will allow the pump to start properly and purge air from the plumbing.

3. Reconnect the plumbing and equipment

Remove the winterizing plugs, reinstall the jets, reconnect the pump, filter, heat pump, and necessary accessories. Check the O-rings and lubricate them as needed with a compatible lubricant.

4. Start the filtration system

Prime the pump and check every connection for leaks. On a sand or AFM filter, perform the appropriate backwash and rinse. On a cartridge filter, make sure the filter elements are clean before proceeding.

5. Clean the pool

Remove large debris, brush the walls, vacuum, or use a robotic cleaner. Chemically balanced water will not remain clear if a large amount of organic matter is still in the pool.

6. Circulate before making major adjustments

Let the water circulate long enough to obtain a representative sample before adjusting the parameters. A complete water analysis is particularly useful in the spring.

Balance the water before adding salt

Adding salt to improperly balanced water will not solve pH, alkalinity, hardness, or stabilizer problems. The order of corrections remains important.

Start by measuring:

  • total alkalinity;
  • pH;
  • calcium hardness;
  • stabilizer (cyanuric acid), if your system uses one;
  • free chlorine;
  • the salt concentration.

For the detailed correction sequence, also consult our pool water balancing guide.

How much salt should you add when opening the pool?

Never automatically add back the amount of salt added during the initial installation. Salt does not disappear through evaporation. It is mainly lost when water actually leaves the pool: backwashing, splashing, draining, leaks, or significant dilution.

The correct method is therefore:

  1. measure the current salt level;
  2. check the target specified by your chlorinator's manufacturer;
  3. calculate only the difference to add.
Practical formula

kg of salt to add = volume in liters × desired increase in ppm ÷ 1,000,000

Example: to increase the salinity of a 50,000 L pool by 1,000 ppm, you need approximately 50 kg of salt.

For the MOOV MiniSalt and JustSalt systems we sell, we generally operate around 3,500 ppm in standard mode. Some models also offer a Low Salt mode at around 1,500 ppm, with a reduced maximum capacity.

For Pentair and other brands, always follow the target for the specific model. Do not assume that all systems require the same salinity.

We prefer a high-purity salt such as Pristiva Premium Salt 18.1 kg. For more information, also consult which salt to choose for a salt pool.

Pristiva Starter Kit for opening a salt pool

Our choice for startup

Why use the Pristiva Starter Kit?

The Pristiva Starter Kit is specifically designed for salt pools. It combines two complementary products:

Pristiva Primer

Helps limit metal stains, scaling and corrosion while preparing the water for startup.

Pristiva Premium Shock

Provides an initial shock treatment to reduce the organic load accumulated over the winter.

According to the kit instructions, first turn the filtration system back on, clean the pool, then add the Primer with the pump running and avoid backwashing for approximately 6 hours. Premium Shock is then used for the initial disinfection.

You can find the full range in our Pristiva salt pool collection.

When can you start the salt system?

Activate the cell only when:

  • the pool is clean;
  • the water is balanced;
  • the salt concentration is correct;
  • the added salt is completely dissolved and evenly distributed;
  • the water temperature is compatible with your model;
  • the water flow is adequate.

Then start with a reasonable production percentage and check the chlorine a few days later. It is normal to adjust the percentage based on temperature, sunlight, number of swimmers and daily filtration duration.

If you need to replace or upgrade your salt chlorinator, consult our guide MiniSalt, JustSalt or IntelliChlor: which salt system should you choose?.

Clean the salt cell before the season?

Visually inspect the cell. If the plates are clean, routine acid cleaning is not necessary. Cleaning too often or too aggressively can reduce the lifespan of the plate coating.

If limescale deposits are present, use a specialized product such as Pristiva Salt Cell Cleaner and follow the instructions.

7 common mistakes when opening a saltwater pool

  1. Waiting too long before opening. Warm water encourages algae problems.
  2. Starting the cell immediately in very cold water. Follow the manufacturer's operating range.
  3. Adding several bags of salt without testing the water. Excessive salinity is more difficult to correct.
  4. Adding salt before balancing the water. Correct the important parameters first.
  5. Neglecting mechanical cleaning. A salt system does not replace brushing or filtration.
  6. Running the cell at 100% without checking the chlorine level. The setting should be adjusted as conditions change.
  7. Cleaning the cell with acid unnecessarily. Inspect it before taking action.

Want to start the season with the right settings?

Bring a water sample to Piscine Hippocampe. We can check the overall balance and salt level and help you determine what adjustments to make before putting your salt chlorinator into production.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about opening a saltwater pool

At what temperature should I open a saltwater pool?

You can generally open the pool when the water is still around 12 to 15 °C. The salt cell can remain deactivated until the water reaches the operating range recommended by the manufacturer.

Should I add chlorine to a saltwater pool at opening?

Yes, an initial disinfection treatment is often used before the cell takes over, particularly when the water is still cold. The Pristiva kit includes a shock treatment suitable for start-up.

How many bags of salt should I add?

It depends on the pool volume and the salt level already present. Test the salinity first, then add only the amount needed to reach your system's target.

What salt level is required for a MOOV system?

At Piscine Hippocampe, we generally work around 3,500 ppm in standard mode for MiniSalt and JustSalt. Some models also offer a Low Salt mode around 1,500 ppm. Always confirm the exact model before adjusting.

Why isn't my salt system producing chlorine in the spring?

Common causes include water that is too cold, insufficient flow, salinity outside the recommended range, a dirty cell, or a production setting that is too low. Start by checking the system messages, temperature, and salt level.
