Spa troubleshooting guide
Cloudy water, foam, or odor in a spa: causes and solutions
Spa water that becomes cloudy, foamy, or develops an unusual odor does not always have the same cause. The right approach is to identify the symptom, then check the water balance, sanitation, filtration, and plumbing before adding several products.
With Minéraluxe, each product plays a specific role: Oxygen for organic load, Filter Revive for cartridges, Cleanse & Drain for plumbing, and Cube to support the management of deposits and surfaces.
Before correcting the problem: check these 4 elements
An insufficient level quickly allows organic load to accumulate.
An improper balance can reduce treatment effectiveness and cause discomfort.
A saturated filter can recirculate contaminants instead of retaining them.
Water that has been heavily loaded for several months can become more difficult to correct.
Problem #1
Why does spa water become cloudy?
Cloudy water can be caused by a combination of factors: high organic load, insufficient sanitizer, reduced filtration, a dirty filter, or unbalanced pH.
After several bathers, body oils, lotions, and residue can accumulate faster than the system can process them. In this case, oxidation becomes particularly important.
Minéraluxe Oxygen helps break down organic waste left in the water and can support the return to better clarity when used as part of a well-balanced routine.
If the water remains cloudy despite Oxygen
Do not immediately add more products. Instead, check the filter and circulation.
A filter coated with oils, grease, and residue may look clean to the eye while having lost some of its ability to let water circulate properly.
In this case, use Minéraluxe Filter Revive to deep-clean the cartridges.
Problem #2
Why does a spa foam?
Foam is often linked to a buildup of surfactants and contaminants: body oils, lotions, cosmetics, detergents on swimsuits, or organic residues in the water.
The older the water, the more these substances can accumulate. A saturated filter can also worsen the problem by reducing the system's ability to remove them.
The first steps are therefore generally:
- check the sanitizer level;
- clean the filters;
- temporarily increase filtration if necessary;
- oxidize the organic load with Oxygen;
- assess the age of the water.
When draining becomes the best solution
If the foam returns quickly despite proper disinfection, a clean filter, and adequate oxidation, the water may simply have become too heavily loaded.
Before draining, use Minéraluxe Cleanse & Drain to clean the plumbing and internal surfaces of the system before starting again with fresh water.
Problem #3
Why does spa water smell?
An unusual odor does not necessarily mean that there is “too much chlorine” or “too much bromine.” It can appear when organic contaminants are present, when disinfection is insufficient, or when residues have accumulated in the plumbing.
Start by checking the sanitizer, pH, and filtration. If the odor persists after adjustment and filter cleaning, it may be appropriate to clean the plumbing with Cleanse & Drain before draining.
Problem #4
Deposits, waterline, and rough surfaces
When deposits appear on the walls or around the waterline, check the water balance and the minerals present.
The Minéraluxe Cube is part of the system's mineral routine. It helps dislodge certain deposits present on surfaces and limit their reattachment when used regularly.
Quick diagnosis
Which Minéraluxe product for the problem?
Use this section as a starting point, then always confirm the water parameters before making adjustments.
| Symptom | Possible cause | Product to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudy water | Organic load / saturated filter | Oxygen + Filter Revive |
| Foam | Oils, lotions, detergents, heavily loaded water | Oxygen; Cleanse & Drain and draining |
| Persistent odor | Insufficient sanitation / heavily loaded plumbing | Check sanitizer; Cleanse & Drain if necessary |
| Deposits / surfaces | Minerals / water balance | Cube |
The best tool remains water analysis
Two spas with the same symptom may have different causes. Cloudy water may be related to the filter in one case and insufficient sanitizer in another.
The Minéraluxe 6-in-1 test strips allow for quick monitoring at home, but a complete laboratory analysis is especially useful when the problem persists.
Prevention is better than correction
Most recurring spa problems appear when the routine becomes irregular. To reduce the risk of cloudy water, foam, or odors:
- always maintain an appropriate sanitizer level;
- use Cube and Oxygen according to the prescribed routine;
- rinse the filters regularly;
- deep-clean with Filter Revive;
- clean the plumbing before draining with Cleanse & Drain;
- test the water before adding several products.
Need a diagnosis?
Bring a water sample to Piscine Hippocampe
If the water remains cloudy, foamy, or smelly despite your corrections, bring a sample to the laboratory. We can check the overall balance and help you identify the real cause before adding more products.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about spa water problems
Why does my spa become cloudy after several bathers?
The organic load increases quickly after heavy use. Check the sanitizer, oxidize the organic waste, and make sure the filtration is working properly.
Why does my spa foam even if the water appears clean?
Oils, lotions, detergents, and other surfactants can create foam even when the water appears clear. Cleaning the filters and oxidizing the water can help; draining may become necessary if the water is heavily loaded.
Does a bad odor mean there is too much chlorine or bromine?
Not necessarily. An odor may be related to organic contaminants, insufficient sanitation, or residue in the plumbing.
When should the spa be completely drained?
When the water becomes difficult to balance, foam or odors return quickly despite a good routine, or according to the recommended draining frequency for your spa and level of use.
