Biofilm in a spa: causes, treatment and prevention

3 minute read

Biofilm dans un spa : causes, traitement et prévention

A biofilm in a spa is an accumulation of microorganisms that adhere to wet surfaces and protect themselves in a slimy layer. It can develop in the plumbing, areas where water circulation is limited, little-used waterfalls, or pipes isolated by certain valves.

If your spa suddenly uses more sanitizer, if you notice small floating fragments, or if the water becomes difficult to stabilize, biofilm may be one possible cause.

How does biofilm form in a spa?

Biofilm forms more easily in pipes where water circulation is weak or interrupted. When certain jet or waterfall lines remain unused, the sanitizer level may decrease locally, encouraging microorganisms to adhere to and develop on the inner walls.

Poorly maintained water, insufficient sanitizer, prolonged periods without circulation, or plumbing that is never deep-cleaned can also encourage its formation.

Example of biofilm and deposits in a spa pipe

What are the possible signs of biofilm?

  • unusual chlorine or bromine consumption;
  • water that becomes difficult to keep stable;
  • small whitish or translucent fragments in the water;
  • deposits that reappear after cleaning;
  • odors or residue coming from the plumbing.

How do you eliminate biofilm in a spa?

Do not use the spa during treatment. Always follow the directions on the product labels and, if in doubt, have the water tested before proceeding.

  1. Make sure water circulates through all pipes, jets, and waterfalls.
  2. Balance the spa water, particularly the pH.
  3. Temporarily increase the sanitizer level according to the recommended procedure for your maintenance system.
  4. Run the pumps at high speed periodically to help circulate water throughout the plumbing.
  5. When the sanitizer level has returned to the appropriate range for the product used, apply Minéraluxe Cleanse & Drain according to the label instructions.
  6. Remove and clean the cartridges with Minéraluxe Filter Revive.
  7. After the recommended cleaning cycle, drain the spa completely.
  8. Clean the interior surfaces, rinse thoroughly, and fill the spa with fresh water.

Why clean the plumbing before draining?

Draining alone replaces the water, but it does not necessarily clean deposits inside the pipes. A plumbing cleaner is designed to circulate through the system before draining to help dislodge hidden buildup.

How can you prevent biofilm from returning?

  • maintain regular circulation in all pipes;
  • avoid leaving certain jet or waterfall lines closed for long periods;
  • maintain the sanitizer and pH within the recommended ranges;
  • rinse the filters regularly and perform periodic deep cleaning;
  • clean the plumbing before periodic draining;
  • follow a consistent maintenance routine.

FAQ about biofilm in a spa

Does draining alone eliminate biofilm?

Not necessarily. Biofilm can remain attached inside the pipes. That is why cleaning the plumbing before draining is generally more effective than simply replacing the water.

Why is the spa suddenly using more sanitizer?

Organic buildup or biofilm can increase sanitizer demand. However, water analysis can help determine whether there are other possible causes.

How often should spa plumbing be cleaned?

The frequency depends on spa usage and maintenance quality. Periodic cleaning before draining helps limit residue buildup in the pipes.

In summary

Biofilm develops mainly in areas where water circulation is poor and the sanitizer becomes insufficient. Good circulation, consistent maintenance, filter cleaning, and periodic plumbing cleaning are the best ways to reduce the risk of it returning.

If you suspect biofilm or your water becomes difficult to balance, bring a sample to the Piscine Hippocampe water laboratory to receive a recommendation tailored to your spa.
