How to clean a spa filter: complete maintenance guide

Comment nettoyer un filtre de spa : guide d’entretien complet

A clean spa filter is essential for keeping the water clear and helping the filtration system operate efficiently. Over time, hair, sweat, body oils, and other residue accumulate in the pleats of the filter cartridge.

Regular filter maintenance helps limit cloudy or yellowish water, maintain better water quality, and avoid unnecessary use of maintenance products. Here’s how to properly clean a spa filter, from a simple weekly rinse to deep cleaning.

Cleaning a spa filter

How often should you clean a spa filter?

For a spa that is used regularly, we recommend two levels of maintenance:

  • Every week: rinse the cartridge with water to remove debris accumulated between the pleats.
  • About once a month: perform a deep cleaning with a product designed for filter cartridges, such as Mineraluxe Filter Revive, especially for a moderately used spa.

How to rinse a spa filter every week

Remove the cartridge from the spa and rinse it with a garden hose or under the tap. Direct the water between the filter pleats to dislodge residue.

Do not use a pressure washer. A jet that is too powerful can damage the filter media, tear the pleats, or reduce the cartridge’s effectiveness.

After rinsing, ideally let the cartridge dry completely before reinstalling it. Having a replacement spa cartridge allows you to alternate filters during cleaning.

How to deep clean a spa filter

Rinsing with water mainly removes visible debris. Deep cleaning helps treat more of the buildup present in the filter media.

Why avoid using a pressure washer?

The pleats of a hot tub cartridge are designed to provide a large filtration surface. A jet that is too powerful can damage this filter media. For routine maintenance, a garden hose provides enough pressure to rinse the cartridge effectively without damaging it.

Why use a hot tub filter cleaner?

Mineraluxe Filter Revive is designed for cleaning filter cartridges. Its formula helps loosen and break down accumulated waste in the filter to make cleaning easier.

The product is presented as non-toxic and readily biodegradable. After use, always follow the instructions on the product label for preparing, soaking, and disposing of the solution.

FAQ about spa filter maintenance

Can you simply rinse a spa filter with water?

Yes. Weekly rinsing with water is recommended to remove everyday debris. However, periodic deep cleaning complements this maintenance.

Can you clean a spa filter with a pressure washer?

No. The pressure can damage the pleats and filter media of the cartridge. Use a garden hose or faucet instead.

Why have a second filter cartridge?

A replacement cartridge lets you continue using the spa while the other filter is being cleaned and dries completely.
