AFM® NG expert guide
AFM® NG for swimming pools: why this filter media genuinely changes water quality
The filter is central to swimming pool water quality. And its performance depends directly on the media it contains.
At Piscine Hippocampe, we have made Dryden Aqua's AFM® NG a benchmark solution for customers who want to improve filtration fineness, reduce filter fouling, and achieve more stable water quality day to day.
Understanding the difference
What is AFM® NG?
AFM® NG stands for Activated Filter Media – Next Generation. It is an activated filter media made from selected green and brown glass, then subjected to a multi-stage activation process to obtain a bio-resistant surface and improved filtration properties.
It is designed to replace sand in compatible media filters. The goal is not simply to replace one material with another, but to improve the filter's actual ability to remove fine particles and organic load.
The key figure to remember
95% of particles above 1 micron
According to technical data from Dryden Aqua and independent IFTS tests, AFM® NG Grade 1 removes approximately 95% of particles larger than 1 μm under the published test conditions.
By comparison, high-quality silica sand is rated at around 95% of particles larger than 20 μm in these same comparisons.
In other words: AFM® NG enables the filter to work much more finely than traditional media.
Why finer filtration matters
Fine particles responsible for a hazy or slightly cloudy appearance are retained more effectively.
Removing more organic matter helps the rest of the treatment process work under better conditions.
The bio-resistant surface is designed to limit biofouling and media agglomeration.
The media is designed to retain its filtration properties over a long period.
AFM® NG vs. silica sand: a simple comparison
| Criterion | AFM® NG | Silica sand |
|---|---|---|
| Published filtration fineness | 95% > 1 μm | 95% > 20 μm |
| Bio-resistant surface | Yes | No |
| Risk of biological channeling | Reduced | Higher with age and fouling |
| Longevity | Designed for a very long service life | Common periodic replacement |
| Initial investment | Higher | Lower |
Bio-resistance: an often underestimated advantage
In a traditional filter, organic matter and bacteria can contribute to biofilm formation on the media. This buildup can promote agglomeration, channeling, and a gradual loss of performance.
AFM® NG is designed not to support bacterial growth on its surface. This helps maintain a cleaner and more uniform filter bed during normal filter operation.
Does AFM® NG reduce the need for chemicals?
Better filtration removes more particles and organic matter before they remain in the water. This can reduce the load that the disinfection system has to handle.
However, you have to remain realistic: AFM® NG does not replace chlorine, salt, water balancing, or good circulation. It is a filtration technology that improves the foundation of water treatment.
Piscine Hippocampe + AFM® NG
Why we have developed genuine expertise around AFM® NG
At Piscine Hippocampe, AFM® NG is not a product randomly added to a shelf. We incorporate it into our filtration recommendations, new installations, and conversions of existing filters when the project is suitable.
Our team can help you determine:
- whether your current filter is suitable for AFM® NG;
- the amount of media required based on the filter capacity;
- whether converting from sand is appropriate;
- how to properly configure the media layers;
- how to perform backwashing after the conversion;
- which filter to choose if you are also replacing your equipment.
This combination of products, inventory, technical advice, and complete solutions is what allows us to become a trusted AFM® NG reference for pool owners in Quebec.

View the AFM® NG comboHow much AFM® NG should be put in a filter?
The quantity depends on the filter’s nominal capacity and the configuration of the filter bed. You should not simply replace each pound of sand with one pound of AFM® NG without checking the recommendations from the manufacturer and Dryden Aqua.
If you know your filter model or its sand capacity in pounds, our team can help you determine the appropriate quantity before purchase.
Can AFM® NG be installed in an existing filter?
In several conventional sand filters, yes. AFM® is designed as replacement media for compatible sand filtration systems.
Before converting, however, you should check the condition of the filter, the strainers, the multiport valve, and the tank capacity. Replacing the media in a very old or damaged filter is not always the best investment.
Does AFM® NG work with a saltwater pool?
Yes. The filter media acts independently of the disinfection method. It can therefore be used in a chlorine or salt system, provided that the filter itself is compatible.
How do I maintain a filter with AFM® NG?
The principle remains similar to that of a sand filter: monitor the clean-filter baseline pressure and the return flow, and backwash when an increase in pressure or a decrease in flow indicates that the filter bed is loaded.
Avoid backwashing too frequently. The filter needs time to retain particles, and each backwash discharges treated water.
AFM® NG or a new filter: how do you decide?
If your filter is in good condition, converting the media can be an effective way to improve filtration. If the tank, valve, or laterals are aging, a complete replacement may make more sense.
The MOOV 24-inch filter and the 24-inch Carvin combo with AFM® NG are two options to consider depending on the installation.
AFM® NG FAQ
Frequently asked questions before switching to AFM® NG
Does AFM® NG really filter down to 1 micron?
Dryden Aqua states that AFM® NG Grade 1 removes approximately 95% of particles larger than 1 μm under test conditions published and verified by IFTS.
Is it better than sand?
In terms of filtration fineness and resistance to biofouling, AFM® NG offers significant technical advantages. However, sand remains a simple and economical solution.
Do I need to change AFM® NG every few years?
Dryden Aqua presents AFM® as a long-lasting media, with documented performance over more than ten years. However, the filter's actual condition and maintenance quality remain important.
Can I use AFM® NG with a salt system?
Yes, if your filter is compatible. The filter media and the disinfection system serve different functions.
Can Piscine Hippocampe tell me how many bags to buy?
Yes. Give us the filter model or its sand capacity, and we can help you determine the appropriate configuration for your installation.
